So many female stars are known as divas – some got the title for their powerful presence on stage or on screen, while others have been given the name after many rumors circulated about their backstage demands or other extravagant needs. Some claim its all just a part of their famous persona and they embrace it when they’re working, while others say they aren’t a diva at all and only behave that way to look powerful and confident in their work. Beyonce Knowles

Beyonce says her diva behavior stays on the stage because her mother wouldn’t approve of her having a diva attitude in real life: “I can guarantee that my mom would lock me up until I came back down to earth if I acted like a diva. When I’m on stage, yeah, I’m a diva. When I’m in front of the camera, I’m a diva. But when I’m not performing, I leave that behind.”

Mariah Carey

Mariah doesn’t think being a diva is a bad thing:”I don’t think of diva as being a negative term. To me, diva just means you’re fabulous. I always thought that Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin were fabulous divas. A diva has to have talent you know.”

Joan Collins

Joan doesn’t like the title because she wants to be known for her work: “I hate that. I’m an actress. I’m a working, jobbing actress. Whatever a diva is, I don’t understand that label. Maybe it’s the fact I’ve always had a certain amount of confidence in the way I walk, act and dress and talk from the time I was very young.”

Jennifer doesn’t like all the talk of her diva behavior – she says she doesn’t act like one but knows it’s a part of her image: “I never like stories where people say I misbehave or act like a diva, because I don’t. Or that I make terrible demands, because those are always fabricated stories, and always have been. But they’ve become such a strong part of my image that I have no control over it. They’re not true, though, and that’s always bothered me. You have to keep a sense of humour. There’s something that people want about that diva idea, and I don’t understand it and it bothers me because it’s not the type of person I am, but what can I do?”

Christina says she acts independently and if that is what makes her a diva she is proud of the label: “As for a diva, I’m not the type of woman who can be told what to do.
